Ants |
Ants are the most successful species on Earth. They have been around for over 100 million years, and today there are more than 20,000 known species. Some estimates consider ants may outnumber humans by 1,000,000 to 1. Ants can be very intelligent. A colony can in many ways operate as a single mind, with the hundreds to thousands of individual ants each processing information about their surroundings and relaying it back the group much like a tiny, living super-computer. Ants can smell food from up to 15 feet away, and leave a trail to alert others to where the food can be found. Ants can eat just about anything... in fact, if you were to go out jogging, get sweaty, come home and lean against a wall for a moment... ants could eat off that sweat stain for weeks. The key to proper ant control is baiting, baiting, baiting. It is important to know the proper baits to use to attract and eliminate the specific types of ants you have. At PESTEX we know exactly what's going on with your ants. We know exactly what to do about it, and we know exactly how to protect your home or business from future ant invaders. |
Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related families of wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. They are a diverse group of more than 12,000 species, with a higher diversity in the tropics. They are known for their highly organized colonies and nests, which sometimes consist of millions of individuals. Individuals are divided into sub-fertile, and more commonly sterile, females ("workers", "soldiers", and other castes), fertile males ("drones"), and fertile females ("queens"). Colonies can occupy and use a wide area of land to support themselves. Ant colonies are sometimes described as superorganisms because the colony appears to operate as a unified entity. Ants have colonized almost every landmass on Earth. The only places lacking indigenous ant species are Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, parts of Polynesia, the Hawaiian Islands, and other remote or inhospitable islands. When all their individual contributions are added up, they may constitute up to 15 to 25% of the total terrestrial animal biomass. Termites, sometimes called white ants, are not closely related to ants, although they have similar social structures. Velvet ants, although resembling large ants, are wingless female wasps.
